Education Assistant
Planting Fields Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation located in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York, is seeking an Education Assistant.  The mission of Planting Fields Foundation is “to preserve and interpret Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park as the premier public garden and Gold Coast estate for today and tomorrow by educating, enriching and entertaining the visiting public.”

The Education Assistant reports both to the Education Director and Field Trip Coordinator of Planting Fields Foundation.

A candidate is required to have an undergraduate degree in education, museum studies or related field (recreation, ecology, horticulture, history, preservation), and two years teaching/docenting experience. Imperative is the ability to use a variety of computer programs including Word, Excel, etc.   Being familiar with Sage software is a plus.

Responsible for:

  • Assisting the Field Trip Coordinator in all aspects of field trip implementation.
  • Overseeing all field trips including but not limited to set-up, breakdown, check-in and debriefing Educators, ensuring all materials are complete and available and monitoring field trips and troubleshooting problems.
  • Meeting and greeting school groups at buses and unloading lunches.
  • Facilitating field trip programs when the Field Trip Coordinator is unavailable.
  • Assisting with the organization and distribution of curriculum materials to schools.
  • Assisting the Field Trip Coordinator in the training and coordination of Educators.
  • Responding to first aid emergencies (Red Cross Certification provided by Planting Fields Foundation).
  • Assisting with all public programs including record keeping, ticketing, implementation, promotion and evaluation.
  • Working with the Education Director to develop new programming and program incentives.
  • Assisting with the planning and execution of educational components for public events.
  • Facilitating day, evening and weekend programs, as scheduled.
  • Assisting with all program set-up and breakdown. 
  • Working with and reporting to the Education Committee.
  • Developing and sustaining strong contacts with area school districts, universities and adult education centers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate must have:

  • Patience, high-energy, self-motivation and a flexible team player able to adapt rapidly to new situations.
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills with both adults and children, as well as the ability to speak confidently to public groups as well as on the phone.
  • The ability to apply age-appropriate activities and programs in teaching and be comfortable working with a broad range of educational themes, disciplines and audiences.
  • Interest in horticulture, environmental science, history and design.
  • Must be able to reach, grasp, and pull from kneeling, stooping, or standing and reaching overhead positions, and carry a minimum of 30 lbs.
  • Ability to climb two flights of stairs and work in an office environment.
