Filed Trip Coordinator

Planting Fields Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation located in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York, is seeking a Field Trip Coordinator.  Planting Fields Foundation, in collaboration with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, preserves, interprets and enhances Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, as a premier intact Long Island Gold Coast estate and arboretum, by providing educational and enriching experiences.

The Field Trip Coordinator reports to the Education Director.

Responsible for:

  • Managing all school field trip programs including planning, scheduling, budgeting, record keeping, implementation, promotion and evaluation.
  • Overseeing and coordinating per diem Field Trip Educators including recruitment, training, scheduling, evaluation and compensation.
  • Developing curriculum for school field trips and other education programs of the Foundation.
  • Assisting with the development of exhibitions, discovery areas and publications.
  • Maintaining and establishing collaborative relationships with other educational sites and organizations.
  • Making presentations about the Foundation’s educational programs to internal and external audiences.
  • Developing and sustaining contacts and relationships with area school districts, universities and adult education centers.
  • Working with and reporting to the Foundation’s Education Committee.
  • Working with other departments to further the mission of Planting Fields Foundation.

The ideal candidate must have:

  • A BA/BS in education, museum studies or related fields (recreation, ecology, horticulture, history, preservation).  A Masters degree is a plus.
  • At least five years experience in field trip management and education.
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills with both adults and children, and the ability to speak confidently to groups.
  • The ability to determine and implement age-appropriate activities and be adapt at working with a broad range of educational themes, disciplines and audiences.
  • An understanding of object-based teaching and experiential education methods.
  • An interest in horticulture, environmental science, history and preservation.
  • Basic computer skills including experience with word processing and databases such as Excel.
  • Be able to reach, grasp, and pull from kneeling, stooping, or standing and reaching overhead positions, and carry a minimum of 30 lbs.
  • The ability to climb two flights of stairs, work in a fast paced environment and be a flexible team player.
